Pest control in Green Valley Ranch

Green Valley Ranch is the newer half of Green Valley, the Henderson master plan that opened in 1978. Building here began in 1994, the resort followed in 2001 and The District opened in 2004, so the community is complete and its landscaping is fully grown. On flatter ground below the MacDonald Highlands foothills, with parks, lawns and tall palms, it is the clearest example in Henderson of an irrigated neighborhood, and its pests are the irrigated kind.

Mature landscaping and roof rats

Thirty years of growth means palms with deep skirts of dead fronds, citrus in fruit and shade trees that reach the roof. The Southern Nevada Health District notes that roof rats were first identified in the valley around imported palm trees and that reports cluster in areas with heavy vegetation and water, and University of Nevada Extension describes them nesting in attics and palm thatch and entering homes from trees and power lines. In Green Valley Ranch that is the inspection: the roofline, the attic vents, the palm skirts and the fruit on the ground.

Irrigation ants and the roaches below

Lawns, parks and drip systems keep the ground damp in a place that would otherwise be dry, and ants follow the water. Leaking emitters and sprinkler heads draw them, and in the hottest weeks they come indoors for relief. Below ground, American cockroaches live in sewers, meter boxes and storm drains and come up through floor drains and plumbing gaps, while Turkestan roaches shelter in the irrigation and meter boxes along every sidewalk. An established sewer network and decades of landscaping give both more to work with than a new subdivision does.

Scorpions and spiders in an older community

Green Valley Ranch sees fewer bark scorpions than the foothill communities above it, but not none: thirty-year-old block walls have more cracks than new ones, and the washes that drain the hills pass through. Western black widows are everywhere in Nevada and favor garages, woodpiles and porches, which an established neighborhood has in abundance. We treat the walls and garages here with the same care as on the desert edge, with more attention to the roofline than we would give a new street.

  • Ants: Lawns, parks and drip systems that keep the ground damp.
  • Cockroaches: American roaches from the established sewers; Turkestan roaches in meter boxes.
  • Spiders: Black widows in garages, woodpiles and older block walls.
  • Scorpions: Older walls with more cracks, and the washes that cross the community.

Frequently asked questions

Do you serve Green Valley Ranch?

Yes. Green Valley Ranch is minutes from our base in Henderson and part of our regular service area. Call or text with your cross streets to schedule.

Why are roof rats such a problem in an established neighborhood?

Because the trees finally offer what they need. Roof rats travel along branches, fences and power lines, nest in palm skirts and attics, and feed on fruit. A fully grown neighborhood gives them all of that on every block, so the fix is sealing your roofline and removing the fruit and frond cover on your own property.

Do I still need to worry about scorpions here?

Less than in the foothills, but yes. Older block walls crack, washes carry scorpions down from the hills, and a home with a pool or heavy irrigation supplies the insects they eat. An inspection tells you whether your walls are hosting them.

Ants keep coming back to my kitchen every summer. Why?

In summer ants come indoors looking for water and relief from the heat, usually along a drip line or sprinkler that runs near the foundation. We find the trail to the colony and the moisture that supports it, treat both, and tell you what to fix in the irrigation.
