Pest control in Southern Highlands

Southern Highlands sits at the far southern edge of the Las Vegas Valley, where newer master-planned streets meet open desert and the foothills. A golf course and greenbelts run through the middle, so homes here get both kinds of pest pressure: desert scorpions and pack rats from the edges, ants and roaches from the irrigated interior.

The southern edge of the valley

Lots along the community's outer streets back onto undeveloped desert and the washes that drain the hills to the south. Bark scorpions, black widows and pack rats move in along those corridors, and the block walls and rock mulch of newer construction give them daytime shelter a few feet from the house.

Golf course and greenbelt interior

The irrigated core around the golf course is a different world: lawns, shade trees and constant water. Ants trail in from the turf, American and Turkestan roaches live in the valve and drainage boxes, and orb weavers and widows set up along fences to catch what the lights attract.

Newer homes, familiar gaps

Most Southern Highlands homes are two-story stucco builds from the 2000s onward with attached garages. The common entry points are the garage door seals, the weep screeds at the base of the stucco, unscreened vents and the gaps where utilities enter. Sealing those is a large part of keeping scorpions out.

  • Ants: Golf-course turf and irrigation.
  • Spiders: Widows along fences and garages; orb weavers in fall.
  • Cockroaches: Valve boxes and drainage around the greenbelt.
  • Rodents: Pack rats at the desert edge.

Frequently asked questions

Is Southern Highlands in your service area?

Yes. Southern Highlands is on the south side of the valley, and we serve the entire Las Vegas Valley from our base in Henderson.

Why do homes near the golf course get ants?

Turf, shade and daily irrigation keep the soil damp year-round, which is exactly what ant colonies need in the desert. Trails follow the drip lines to the house. Treatment has to reach the colony; spraying the trail alone brings them back within days.

Do new homes get scorpions?

Often more than older ones. Grading disturbs the desert the scorpions lived in, and fresh block walls and rock landscaping give them better shelter than they had before. Lots that back onto washes or open desert see the most.

What should I check in my garage?

The bottom seal on the garage door, the gaps around the side door, and the water heater and utility penetrations. Garages are where we find the most scorpions and widows in Southern Highlands, because the door seal is the biggest gap in the house.
