Ant Control in Henderson and Las Vegas
Ant control for Henderson and Las Vegas homes
In a desert city, ants go where the water is: drip lines, hose bibs, kitchens, and bathrooms. Spraying the trail you see kills a few workers and leaves the colony intact. Ant control that works identifies the species, follows the trail back, and treats the source.
Ants in the Las Vegas valley
Several ant species are common around Las Vegas homes. Pavement ants and odorous house ants are the small dark ants that trail along foundations and into kitchens. Southern fire ants are reddish, nest in lawns and sunny soil, and sting. Harvester ants build large, bare, gravel-ringed mounds in desert yards and strip vegetation around them. Argentine ants thrive in irrigated landscapes and form huge connected colonies.
Moisture drives almost all of it. Irrigation emitters, leaky hose bibs, condensation lines, and pet water bowls become reliable water sources in a place that otherwise has none. Summer heat and monsoon storms push ants indoors in waves, which is why problems spike in July and August.
Ants also follow structure. Block walls, pavers, stucco cracks, and the gap where the slab meets the stem wall give them covered highways from the yard to the house.
Signs of an ant problem
- Steady trails along baseboards, counters, or window sills, often leading to a sink, dishwasher, or pet bowl.
- Piles of fine soil or sand pushed up between pavers, along the foundation, or in expansion joints.
- Mounds in the lawn or gravel, especially after watering or rain.
- Winged ants indoors in spring or after summer storms, which means a mature colony is nearby.
- Stings while gardening or standing on the lawn, which points to southern fire ants.
What our ant service does
The visible trail is a small part of the colony. Our service starts by identifying the species, because what works on pavement ants differs from what works on fire ants or Argentine ants.
- Inspect. We walk the whole property: exterior, block walls, landscaping, garage, and every place pests get in.
- Plan. You get a plain explanation of what we found and exactly what we recommend before any work starts.
- Treat. Treatment targets where the pests live and travel, not a blanket spray of every surface.
- Follow up. Follow-up is scheduled for the pest and the property, with a short list of what to watch for between visits.
What that means for ants
- Inspection along the foundation, irrigation lines, block walls, and the indoor rooms where trails appear, to locate nests and the routes ants take inside.
- Treatment aimed at the colony and its routes, with the method matched to the species, instead of a blanket spray of the trail.
- Exterior perimeter treatment to interrupt the paths from yard to house.
- A list of the moisture sources and gaps we found, because fixing a leaking emitter or sealing a slab gap is often what keeps the ants from coming back.
What you can do between visits
- Fix leaky hose bibs and irrigation emitters, and water early in the morning so surfaces dry.
- Wipe counters and sweep floors in the kitchen daily during summer, and store sweets and pet food sealed.
- Seal cracks where the slab meets the wall, around pipes under sinks, and along window sills.
- Pull mulch and ground cover back from the foundation so there is a dry gap.
- Avoid spraying trails indoors before a service visit; it scatters the colony and makes it harder to treat.
Frequently asked questions
Why do ants show up every time I water the yard?
Watering floods shallow nests and drives ants up and out, and the wet soil and standing water draw them to the surface. If trails appear right after irrigation, the nest is likely under the lawn, pavers, or planting bed that just got wet.
Why do the ants keep coming back after I spray?
Sprays kill the workers on the trail and often cause a colony to split into several new ones. The queen and most of the colony are still in the nest. Treatment has to reach the nest or be carried back to it.
Are there fire ants in Las Vegas?
Yes. The southern fire ant is native to the Southwest and common in Las Vegas lawns and sunny soil. Its sting is painful and leaves a small welt. It is not the same species as the imported red fire ant of the Southeast, but it should still be treated with care around children and pets.
What are the big ants with the bare mound in my yard?
Those are harvester ants. They clear all vegetation in a circle around the nest and carry seeds back in long lines. They sting if disturbed, and the mounds can be a problem in yards with kids or dogs.
