Pest control in Skye Canyon

Skye Canyon is a master plan of about 1,700 acres in northwest Las Vegas, at U.S. 95 and Skye Canyon Park Drive, where the highway heads toward the Spring Mountains. Ground broke in 2014, the first homes followed in 2015, and building continues toward a planned 6,500 homes. Almost everything here is new, and new desert-edge construction has a pest profile of its own: scorpions, crickets and black widows now, with the irrigation pests arriving as the landscaping fills in.

What new construction stirs up

Every Skye Canyon street was open desert within the last decade, and some are being graded now. That ground held bark scorpions, crickets and black widows, and grading does not remove them; it moves them. University of Arizona Extension notes that bark scorpions shelter under rocks and in the burrows of other animals and gather in hollow-block walls, so the first thing a new subdivision builds, the perimeter wall, is also the first thing they move into. Fresh stucco, rock mulch, stacked block on the next lot and construction lighting that draws crickets all help.

What is not here yet

Young landscaping is the other half of the story. Roof rats depend on mature cover: University of Nevada Extension describes them nesting in attics and palm thatch and entering from trees and power lines, and University of Arizona Extension ties them to old-growth citrus, palms and mature landscaping. A five-year-old yard has none of that, so rodent calls in Skye Canyon are mostly mice in garages rather than rats in attics. Expect the roof rat picture to change as the trees grow.

The northwest desert edge

Skye Canyon sits where the valley floor begins to rise toward the mountains, with open desert on its outer sides and parks and trails threaded through it. Irrigated parks and new lawns beside raw desert supply the moisture and the insects that scorpions and spiders follow. Our inspection on a new home concentrates on the block walls, the weep screed, the gaps around garage doors and utility penetrations, and the meter and valve boxes where Turkestan roaches arrive within a year or two of the water being turned on.

Pests that matter most in Skye Canyon

  • Scorpions: Graded desert, new block walls and construction on the next street.
  • Spiders: Black widows in new walls, garages and the gaps around fresh stucco.
  • Cockroaches: Turkestan roaches moving into new meter and valve boxes.
  • Ants: New lawns and drip systems beside open desert.
  • Rodents: Mice in garages now; roof rats later, as trees mature.

Frequently asked questions

Do you serve Skye Canyon?

Yes. Skye Canyon is part of our regular service area, and we serve the entire Las Vegas Valley from our base in Henderson. Call or text with your cross streets to schedule.

Our house is brand new. Why are we finding scorpions?

Because the lot was desert a few years ago and the street behind you may still be under construction. Grading moves scorpions and crickets rather than removing them, and new block walls give them a better home than the open ground did. Sealing the house and treating the walls in the first spring makes the biggest difference.

Should I expect roof rats in Skye Canyon?

Not yet in most of the community. Roof rats need mature palms, fruit trees and dense cover, and new landscaping does not offer that. Mice in the garage are the more common rodent call here. As trees grow over the next decade, the roofline will matter more.

Does living near the mountains change the season?

Slightly. The northwest edge sits higher and cools sooner in fall, so scorpion activity tends to wind down a little earlier than in the center of the valley and start a little later in spring. The season still runs from the first warm nights to October.
